Webbspun Ideas and Services:

Hotel people must know their cities to pass it on to their guests

Hate to put it like that but it is true. I competed in the Hospitality Olympics the other day here in Nashville and all the competition had something to do with hotels and what we do in them. No, no there wasn't as competition on sex but there was a cooking competition. Imagine a "Iron Chef" with a bunch of wild, competitive people running around.

Okay, so one of the competitions was "Are You Smarter Then a General Manager"  and is done in the vein of "Are You Smarter Then a 5th Grader?" All the questions were basic Nashville attractions, history, music, etc questions but if you couldn't even get three answers right, your team had to leave the stage. As you may or may not imagine, a few teams couldn't get a single question right! For God's sake people, you were in an industry where people are constantly asking questions about our fair city!

Now here is the part where I acted like a 5th grader. I watched one team, a hotel in downtown Nashville that has the initials, C'yard who couldn't get one answer right and I said you'd have to suck to not get one question right. oops! I let it slip

Within a few seconds I had them walk up to ask what I said and I told them that I said, "it would suck to not get any questions right and have to leave the stage." I meant it but didn't tell the truth, I said and meant that you must suck to not have a clue about your city. It is the bare basics of the hotel industry to be on the front lines and know the basic info about your city. So yeah, some teams and people suck because they have no clue and can't even study.

That being said, it was a great time but people please learn something about Nashville. No wonder people talk about not finding out good info until it is to late. Until they talk to someone who is well informed and well studied. Someone who takes the time to care and know their city. Do it for yourself and do it for your guests who will ask you where to go and what to eat and the million other questions you get in the industry.

Get a life people and if you can't take the heat...get out of the business. Learn about your hometown or just stay home and let the rest of us do it.
